A winter's day.....

6:12 am - Sunday - Cinco de Mayo - LPG&RVR - 30° F, humidity 82%, wind 8 mph out of the west by northwest.....heavy cloud cover this morning, with snow coming mid morning, and for today a forecast high of 40° F coming around 5 pm....lol!  On this date in 2018 TLE and I were touring Niagara Falls.....

Saturday was a work day, and we were up around 6 am, but I knew I would not be working much that day as rain was forecast all day long, becoming snow in the evening, and that is what happened.  TLE and I both reported for work at the usual 7:45 am, and by 8 am it was raining.  I hung around for about an hour before heading home until TLE's 12 pm lunch break....

....it was still raining steadily at 10:23 am, and extremely windy with sustained winds over 20 mph, and occasional gusts to 40 mph....sounds like a winter's day to me.....

....it was bitter cold outside all day.  I returned to the Clubhouse to give TLE her lunch break around 11:45 am, and she was gone by 11:50 am.  The hour passed quickly, and soon I was back home in the warm confines of our Newell for another 4 hours.  I returned to the Clubhouse around 4:30 pm to help TLE close for the day.  I did the vacuuming for her, and turned out the lights and locked one of the doors before heading down to the 'Night Registration Office' to flip the sign, and post the available sites for the night.  We have only had one, or two walkups this season after 5 pm, and did not expect any on this frigid, snowy, breezy evening.

The forecast snow came sometime during the night, but was only a 'dusting', as they say, but some of it has stuck, and it is still bitter cold as I write, plus there is still snow in today's (Sunday) forecast by mid morning, so I do not think I will be working much today, either.

Thanks for stopping by!

'Making hay while the sun shines....'

6:24 am - Saturday - May 4th - LPG&RVR - 49° F, humidity 55%, wind 20 mph out of the south.....heavy cloud cover this morning to be followed by rain, and then snow with a forecast high of 51° F.  On this date in 2013 TLE and I were overnighting at a Walmart in North Belle Vernon, PA....had the parking lot all to ourselves.....

.....isn't she beautiful?!

The clear, blue skies and balmy temperatures Friday morning gave no indication of the havoc that will be reeked beginning Saturday morning when it will rain most of the day, then snow all night, and then return to rain Sunday morning, then snow again in the afternoon.  Instead there was barely a breeze, and lots of sun as we began the first of four work days.  When three out of four of your workdays show rain and snow you must 'make hay while the sun shines' and that is what I did Friday.  After staging five golf carts (we eventually rented 12) I headed out to do my first round of the course.  I haven't been able to do much work in our sand traps yet this seasons as they have been wet most of the time, and it is hard to rake them when they are so.  However, the sprinklers have been off for a week, and with no measurable precipitation in a week they were ripe for the picking.  By the time I finished my round all four were raked, and I had weeded and raked the largest of them all.....hole #15.....

....after returning to the Clubhouse I got out one of the Stihl string trimmers and went to work around the putting green, and around the numerous trees that dot the grassy area on each side of the cart path leading to holes 1 and 10.  Once that was done I got out the John Deere riding lawnmower and mowed around the putting green, around the edges of the grassy areas where DeWayne cannot get with the large rough mower, then mowed the tee boxes for hole #10 for the first time this season.  By the time I finished it was time to give TLE her lunch break.

After lunch I made another round of the course as marshal, then picked up the Husqvarna riding mower to head out to the tee boxes at hole #3....I noticed some smoke in the distance up near Eagle Mountain.....

.....upon my return I mowed the grass around the large pavilion, then began cleaning the golf carts which had been returned.  By 5 pm all 9 of the Yamaha gassers had returned, but none of the three Club Car gassers, so I'll have to deal with them Saturday morning before the rains come.

Being a Friday bacon was on the menu, and below is the ultimate proof of love from TLE.....2 fried eggs over easy on a bed of hashbrowns, with the star of the show....bacon.....a nice way to end any Friday.....

.....Friday's temp got all the way to 67° F making it the warmest day in a week, but winter is still lurking just around the corner as we return to wintery conditions for the next three days.

To discard, or not....

6:03 am - Friday - May 3rd - LPG&RVR - 28° F, humidity 91%, wind 1 mph out of the southeast.....crystal clear, blue, sunny skies today with a forecast high of 67° F. On this date in 2018 TLE and I were in Ashtabula, OH having lunch at a local eatery, and watching a bridge being raised for boat traffic.....

.....the food, and brews were amazing!

As have most of the mornings the past 3 weeks have been, the temps were of a winery nature as Thursday dawned.  And as has been the case for at least the past week we didn't venture outdoors until well after 10 am (on days we don't work), and even then it was very cold.

After finishing my daily post I headed into the bedroom to begin sorting through all my clothes.  I have two hanging closets, as does TLE.  In addition I have 4 drawers, and  a large Tupperware bin (stored under the bed) in which I store out of season clothing until they are needed again.  Why?  Well, I have too much stuff again, and it is time to thin the heard, so to speak.  I went through all those storage areas and created three piles....discard, maybe, and keep.

Sorting through my clothes is always a very personal thing with me.  Afterall, I chose to buy those clothes, and I've worn those clothes on and off for years.  I have a sort of personal relationship with those clothes, and parting with any single item of clothing is difficult....well, difficult for me.  I have, perhaps, the largest collection of black t-shirts, and long sleeved T's in the southwestern U.S.....lol...and I love every single one of them, even the ones that are one, or two washings away from turning to dust.  All that being said, once I've set my mind to this task I proceed decisively, and within 90 minutes I had my 3 stacks of clothing.  I quickly put away the 'keep pile', and then had TLE join me to go through my discard pile.  She always finds something in that pile she wants, and she does wear those items.

Once she was done I carried what remained of the discard pile, and the entire 'maybe' pile out to the trailer to begin packing away the 'maybe' stack in a large cardboard box.  They'll remain in the trailer in that box until the end of the summer when I'll make my final decisions on them.  The discard pile will be washed, and then donated to a local thrift store.  I might mention, that in the trailer TLE and I had around 7 suitors full of winter jackets, and fall clothing that we've been ignoring for a few years now, but we thinned that heard down to 3, with many of the items in the other four going into the discard pile.

In the afternoon, while I rested from my labors, TLE did the same, only I don't go through her 'discard' pile as nothing would fit me.....lol...and that was our day.  We were going to take a walk early afternoon, but the north wind came up, and that quickly changed our minds.

On the weather front, starting Saturday it does not look good for golf, or any outdoor activities, including work....

.....the chances of precipitation range from 50% to 98% over the next three days, and look at those temps on Saturday, Sunday and Monday....all days we work this week.  Stay tuned for how it all turns out

Some changes.....

8:06 am - Thursday - May 2nd - LPG&RVR - 45° F, humidity 51%, wind 7 mph out of the west by southwest.....heavy cloud cover today with a forecast high of 58° F.  On this date in 2013 TLE and I were overnighting at a Walmart in Hagerstown, MD after visiting the Gettysburg Memorial.....

Alas, Wednesday was another very cold day.  TLE and I did take another 2 mile walk, however, it was not until after 12 pm....it was just too cold earlier.  We managed a meager 3.1 mph, and burned a few more unwanted calories.  We are now at 10 miles of recorded walking this season, and counting (I do a lot of walking when I'm working, but I have no desire to record that....lol)....

....when we were visiting with Claude's friend on Tuesday they had this interesting map of what the North American continent would look like if every major fault line erupted at the same time....

....of course, this is just theory, but this theory shows most of the southwest disappearing into the ocean....most of California is gone, along with Oregon, and Arizona.  The Great Lakes become one massive lake, and Washington D.C. disappears....I think that would be the silver lining....lol.

Claude left to continue his trip to visit his 104 year old mother around 8 am, and then we returned to regularly scheduled programming.  It was a great 4 days, but quite bittersweet to say our 'until next times'.

I spent the rest of the day working in the trailer to reposition a lot of things, adding a safe, and a new cabinet to the driver side of the trailer.  The trailer was in major chaos most the day, but by 4 pm order was restored, and I am very happy with the result....

The new wall cabinet

....both of the tables have been moved forward creating more space in the rear of the trailer to store those things for which access is not needed on a regular basis, plus my tools are now closer to the work bench.  The new wall cabinet is made by the same folks that manufactured my original 3 bin wall cabinet, which is mounted on the passenger side wall of the trailer, and can be seen in the bottom picture in the upper right.  I had to move a couple of my license plates, and a few other things, which I believe makes the trailer much more efficient, whilst providing more storage.

More hanging out....

7:09 am - Wednesday - 05/01/2024 - LPG&RVR - 24° F, humidity 65%, wind 1 mph out of the north by northwest....crystal clear, blue, sunny skies today with a forecast high of 57° F.  On this date in 2014 I finally finished the installation of the new rear bumper on the Newell....I wrote about this a few days ago....love the before and after.....

Tuesday dawned with blustery winds, and the temp at 29° F....the low exactly one year ago on April 30th was 47° F.  TLE had her annual eye exam Tuesday morning at 8:40 am, so she left around 8 am to make the drive into Alturas, and I remained behind to spend time with Claude.  Even though it was sunny, it was bitter cold, but in spite of the cold we stood outside (all bundled up, of course) talking until TLE returned sometime after 10 am....time flies!

Around noon time we drove up to Alturas to visit a friend of Claude's who lives on a moderately sized ranch just south of town.  On the property was this old COE (cab over engine) GMC dump truck of which I just had to take pictures....love that patina.....

.....after a tour of the property and house we all headed into town around 3 pm to the Lazy 'B' BBQ place we've eaten at previously.  We talked, and laughed for over an hour before bidding adieu to Claude's friend, and heading back to LPG&RVR.  None of us was able to finish our orders, so doggie boxes were in order.  Claude and I had the brisket taco plate, and TLE the Diablo Burger.  Both were smothered in jalapeños!

We spent more time visiting with Claude that evening knowing he was leaving Wednesday morning to continue his drive to visit his 104 year old mother in Oregon.  We've had a great 4 days with Claude, and saying our until next times will, as always, be bittersweet.

Thanks for stopping by!

Hanging out.....

7:09 am - Tuesday - April 3oth - LPG&RVR - 29° F (brrrr!!!), humidity 69%, wind 2 mph out of the north by northwest.....cloudy today with a forecast high of 58° F....when is spring coming?  On this date in 2013 TLE and I were touring the Library of Congress.....what a beautiful interior!....

We slept in until after 7 am Monday morning, and that was nice since it was way too cold outside, and even inside, to rise any earlier.  I usually get up about 30 minutes before I know we'll be getting up to turn on the electric heaters, and then get back in bed until the Newell interior is more hospitable to hosting human life, and that has worked well over the years, especially for TLE....lol!

For the first time in four days TLE and I took another 2 mile out and back walk bringing our season total to just 8 miles so far....

....I think the temperature at 10 am, when we took our walk, was just under 50° F, and we were both bundled up against the chill.  We managed to average 3.2 mph once again, burning around 350 caloric units.  Winter continues to have a tight grip on the Pitt River Valley, and from all appearances we are in for even more chilly weather with daily lows plunging to the low 20's, and another threat of rain, snow and sleet this weekend.  On this date last year the low was 47° F, and the high was 75° F, so it is definitely way colder this time around than last. TLE commented the other day that with our current north/south itinerary we are getting two winters, and two springs every year.

When we first began our full time journey back in 2012 my desire was to chase 70° 12 months out of the year.  In hindsight that was a bit too ambitious, and certainly 12+ years later we are failing miserably in the attainment of that goal. The past 10 days certainly tends to add credence to that conclusion.

After we returned from our walk we spent the balance of the morning hanging out with Claude, and enjoying the partially cloudy day, even though it was barely 50°.  We didn't reach the forecast 54° F high of the day until 4 pm.  On top of that frigid temperature add a brisk breeze most the day, and it felt mor like 44° F.  If it weren't for the occasional sun breaking through the clouds I would have been inside most of the day.

Around 5 pm I lit the Sea-B-Que in preparation for the grilling of 3 top sirloin steaks.  It took about 10-11 minutes to get them to medium rare at which time we retired to the Newell interior to have a rare dinner at our formal dining table, which I failed to record for posterity's sake. Nevertheless, we enjoyed a wonderful dinner, and great conversation until after 7:30 pm before broke up the party.  We were in bed a little after 10 pm with our electric blankets set to #2 for moi, and #4 for TLE....it was going to be a chilly night!

For us Monday was a typical first day of our four day weekend.  TLE did a couple loads of laundry, and we mostly just rested.  I caught up on a few of my YouTube channels, and took a nice one hour nap.  Other than our two mile walk, I didn't leave site #55 the rest of the day...perfect!

Thanks for stopping by!

Here's to friendship.....

7:11 am - Monday - April 29th - LPG&RVR - 36° F, humidity 70%, wind 3 mph out of the north by northwest.....crystal clear, blue, sunny skies today with a forecast high of 54° F.  On this date in 2013 TLE and I were touring Mt. Vernon, home of George and Martha Washington.....

Finally....a clear, blue sky day here at LPG&RVR.  While it was extremely cold all day long, it was a beautiful diversion from the dreary, rainy weather we've had the past week.  I only took off my jacket twice Sunday.....once when I gave TLE her lunch break, and once while I was cleaning a golf cart.  Winter continues to have a grip over the Pitt River Valley in which LPG&RVR resides.  Over the next 3 days (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday) the overnight lows will dip into the 20's.  So happy we have our heated hose funneling water into our Newell.

I neglected to mention in yesterday's post that our long time friend, who also happens to be our ex brother-in-law (he was married to one of my sisters for a few years back in the 80's) Claude Banker, arrived here Saturday evening to spend a few days before he continues his journey to visit his 104 year old mother in Oregon.  Even though he and my sister have been divorced for a long time we have remained friends since 1978, when we first met.  Over the decades we have embarked on many adventures of the outdoor variety, including a summit of Mt. Whitney with my oldest son Chris, and too many long range bicycle trips to count.  When I say long range I mean up to 500 miles in length.  You can find a journal I kept of our longest trip taken on two Recumbent Tadpole Trikes back in 2008 here.

Claude and I had breakfast at 'The Grill' at the Clubhouse around 9 am, and then I took him with me on my first round of the golf course.  As many others who have preceded him have found, this is a beautiful place, with an extremely beautiful, well maintained 18 hole golf course.  We haven't seen Claude in  a year, so we had a lot of catching up to do, and the round of the course took about an hour.  Upon our return to the RV park I dropped Claude at the Newell, and went back to work.

The RV park, and cart paths have suffered with all the rain we've had, and there were a lot of tire ruts all over the park, so I spent several hours dragging a screen over all the roads, pull through sites, and carts paths to smooth them out.  I even hauled some gravel in the small dump trailer we have to cover areas on one cart path that had turned to mud, and no longer had any gravel.

In all we rented 10 golf carts on Sunday, and none of them came back with mud encrusted tires and under carriages as was the case on Saturday.  We expect the golf course to remain pretty busy this week as we have a large group (10 RVs) up at the large pavilion who are all avid golfers, which means they will probably play most every day since this week there will be no rain....just the ever present cold.

The last cart returned right at 5 pm, and then it was time to begin our 4 day  weekend.  TLE had ordered two BBQ beef sandwich plates from the restaurant, and Claude had some left over Mexican food from his trip here, which TLE heated up, so we ate our meals on the 'dining/gaming deck', and talked until it got too cold, at which time we retreated to the warm interior of the Newell for another couple of hours sipping whiskey, and revisiting some of our past adventures before Claude bid us adieu for the evening.

I have been negligent in taking pictures Sunday, but I promise to do better Monday....thanks for stopping by!
